Halloween is pretty much Christmas for the hoes. It’s a big bloody deal. Erotica is and always has been a huge element within the genre of horror. The two go hand in hand. So don’t let the prudes fool you into thinking you’re basic for wanting to be sexy on Halloween. Now whilst Monster Mash might well be a bop, it’s not really going to get you in that Halloween seductress mood. Welcome to the ultimate Thotoween Playlist: where sex meets spook.
Pop Spook
Good for the party.
Never let someone tell you that a popular song is a bad one. Quite le opposite, hence the popularity! When I was 11 I have a distinct Halloween memory of me and my bestie dancing in our matching cat outfits in my pink plastered bedroom to Lady Gaga’s ‘Teeth’. Things haven’t changed much! The Strangler’s ‘Golden Brown’ isn’t overtly spooky but there’s definitely a circus-eqsue creepiness to it. A healthy mix of timeless throwbacks (cough ‘Disturbia’ cough) plus TikTok virals (‘Pretty’) and some modern day amazing dark pop from Billie Eilish, Grimes and Ashnikko, the perfect crowdpleasing sexy spook pop!

If you think My Chemical Romance are still out of fashion, it’s time to grow up. No one can deny that every single song on ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’ absolutely slaps. Ellie Roswell’s breathy vocals in ‘You’re A Germ’ singing out ‘He likes her coz’ she’s pure, she likes him coz’ she heard he’s cool’ and then screamed chorus ‘You aint going to heaven, coz’ I’m dragging you down to hell’ makes it one of my favourite Halloween songs- at once seductive and terrifying- the dream! Tom Wait’s voice in itself is the embodiment of Halloween, and whilst I never thought I’d put an Oasis song in a Halloween playlist, the morbid music video to ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ just so happened to be my sexual awakening at 8 years old, prompting the realisation that my kink is in fact…deathly looking men!

Crim3s’ ‘Lost’ feels overwhelmingly suffocating, intense, dreamlike- like you’re lost in a maze and can’t get out… making it perfect for a serious Halloween party, one with the intention to truly horrify. Moodymann- the alt-kid’s god won’t disappoint in ‘Freeki Muthafucka’ as his ultra low voice creaks out: ‘You don’t come out when the sun’s out, I only see you when it rains. I’ve tried to get your attention, baby, But you seem to look away’. Absolute Body Control’s rendition of Eno’s ‘Baby’s On Fire’ is the song for the ethereal alt-girl draped in white and stealing the night. Most of these tunes have a dreamy dark vibe that would be perfect for any drug-induced Halloween party hidden away somewhere in the depths of East London.

An eclectic mix of songs that don’t quite fit into one category but are perfect earphone listening in the lead-up to Halloween, or for getting ready to. The full potential of Kid Cudi’s emo vibe comes out in ‘No One Believes Me’, this song is so Halloween to me. I’m not a musicals girlie but if you don’t die at the sound of that growling, shattering ‘Rooooooxaaaannnne’ in the Moulin Rouge movie soundtrack version of ‘Roxanne’, you’re lying. Die Antwoord’s ‘Pitbull Terrier’ was my on-repeat song last Halloween when I dressed as a cheerleader and wore the sharpest white spiky nails and wanted to feel angelic but also terrifying. ‘Im game- play me’ was my favourite bit. Jockstrap’s new album ‘I Love You Jennifer B’ is worth listening to in general, but it’s first track Neon gets pretty spooky midway through when it suddenly becomes 10x heavier. As for La Femme, their album ‘Psycho Tropical Berlin’ is a Halloween playlist all in itself.
